What’s Wrong With Setting Goals?
Last week on Motivation Monday, we talked about Ernestine Shepherd, the oldest competitive female bodybuilder in the world, whose life accomplishment has taught us that we are never too old for our goals.
Setting goals to back up an ambition in life can not be over emphasized. Whether you’re a young lady in her twenties or an old woman in her fifties, there is nothing you can not achieve if you set goals for yourself. And that is why today, we shall be talking about the importance of setting goals.
Goals give you focus
While a life purpose/ambition gives you a general direction, goals give you laser focus as to what exactly to spend your time and energy on. Even if you have no idea on how to actualize your dreams, the very act of setting goals and an end in mind will give you a sense of direction to what needs to be done.
Goals give you motivation
By setting a goal, you give yourself a certain feat to aim for and get excited about. Shepherd saw herself being celebrated as the oldest competitive bodybuilder and she did everything to achieve it, despite all odds. Goal setting gives motivation and encourages you to put 100% of your effort into your ambition.
Goals allow you to measure progress
If you don’t set specific targets and landmarks for yourself, how will you know if you’re progressing? Even though you may be working hard, your hard work may not translate into anything because there is no end in view. Goals will allow you to know how far you have gone in the pursuit of your ambition.
Goals creates accountability
When you set a goal for yourself, you make yourself accountable to finish the task and overcome procrastination. Rather than just talk, you are now obligated to act.
Goals allows you to take control of your life
As Bill Copeland says, when you don’t set goals, you can spend your whole life running up and down and not achieve anything. Many people today are merely existing in life. Even though they work hard, they don’t feel like they are getting what they want. That’s because they don’t have a direction of where they want to go or what they want to achieve.
When you set goals and think about what you want, you break out of human rat-race and start living a fabulous and an intentional life.
Lastly, goal setting and execution helps you become the best of yourself. It will make you stretch beyond your normal self and reach new heights. Shepherd did not just stop at getting fit physically, she became the oldest competitive female bodybuilder that has ever lived.
So there is absolutely nothing wrong with setting goals. It is the first step you need to take to attain a fulfilling and fabulous life.
